A great month to walk the Camino

Autumn is here, one of our favorite times to do the Camino de Santiago. Why? You just have to feel how the weather is getting cooler at night, the leaves of the trees are falling very slowly and decorate the unique landscapes of our wonderful Camino.

Many of you might be wondering or even planning to do the Camino in October, and asking yourself: is it a good month? Well, it is!!!

In this article we will give you the reasons and some recommendations to convince you and prepare you for this magical experience.

What is the weather like on the Camino de Santiago?

Let’s start by talking about the weather in the northern region of Spain during the year.  It is usually unpredictable, but from the end of March to mid-June and from the end of August to the end of October the temperature is very pleasant for walking (July and August are the hottest months, that is why our tours are offered during these seasons.

During these dates, the mornings and evenings are usually quite cool. Rain is always a possibility on the Camino de Santiago, so our pilgrim kit includes a rain poncho. We also recommend that you bring a pair of waterproof pants or jacket.

Doing the Camino de Santiago in autumn

Doing the Camino de Santiago in autumn is ideal for those who want to feel nature at its best. You will experience days full of sunshine, the occasional drizzle and an ideal weather, with temperatures between 16 and 18 degrees, which will make you enjoy your walk.

That is why October is one of the most recommended months of the year.

Another advantage is that there are far fewer people doing the Camino at this time. The vacations for Europeans are over in August and September and that is why you will have many more options for accommodation, restaurants, and even enjoy uncrowded landscapes.

As for daylight, since you will get up very early in the morning you will be able to enjoy enough light to walk and take advantage of the afternoons and evenings to make guided visits or tours in some of the cities where we spend the night.

Recommendations for doing the Camino de Santiago in October

The first thing we recommend is to talk to one of our Camino Experts for advice on which Camino is best suited to what you are looking for. They can also design a special Camino for you in case you want to come and do it privately this month.

Having said that, the recommended routes to do in October are:

When you sign up for one of these routes, our guides will see the weather forecast and will take care of giving you everything you need so that you are well equipped every step of the way, including refreshments, umbrellas or ponchos, sunscreen, among others.

We hope you are encouraged to come this October 2021 which is Holy Year.

Buen Camino
